Try this tutorial to get photos looking more professional.

You can take AMAZING photos, even if you just have a phone camera. Regardless of how old or new your phone is, the key is knowing and using good light.

I'll give you a practical tutorial to help you develop a skill professional photographers value the most.

I've been a professional photographer for over 15 years and what makes a good photographer is a keen eye for light.

If you don't have a fancy camera, no problem! All you need is your phone camera.

HERE'S THE PRACTICAL TUTORIAL:

One of the best ways of learning how to use light is by taking photos of artwork. This is because bad lighting, distracting shadows and low quality images are unforgiving when trying to replicate art with a photo.

My daughter is an artist and I photograph all her artwork with my iPhone before posting it on her Instagram account.

Here's how I use good light to make her artwork photos look pro:

1) Find the brightest, largest source of indirect light. For me, this is a big window not facing direct sunlight. Also, make sure it's the only light falling on your subject.

2) Use white boards as a background and a reflector to maximize the quality of your light.

3) Zoom in a touch to minimize image warping. If you're digitally zooming in, be careful not to zoom in too much otherwise you'll lose quality. (If you're using the optical zoom of 3x or 5x on an iPhone 15 pro max, you don't have to worry about losing quality).

4) Import your photos to Lightroom Mobile (it's a free app you should install on your phone! It's the best editing app and the only one you'll ever need for your photo editing. Adobe created it for photography professionals and has made it available to all iPhone and Android users, for free.)

5) Increase contrast, exposure, clarity and texture, as well as sharpening and noise reduction. If you pay for the premium features in Lightroom Mobile, use the masking tool to select the white background to make it brighter and cleaner.

6) Export the photo in JPG format in high quality (100%) and low-resolution (2048px), which is optimal when posting on social media and on your website.

I'm launching my online Phone Photography Course very soon (!!), where I'll teach:

  • technical aspects of your mobile phone camera that you can control
  • how to master light in any situation to create high quality, stand-out photos
  • 12 rules of composition for high impact photos
  • how to use storytelling and purpose to get more viewer engagement
  • how to develop your creative practice
  • how to edit in Lightroom Mobile to take photos to the next level

Just like the hundreds of students that have already taken my live Mobile Phone Photography workshops in the past two years, soon you'll be able to access this learning experience in a pre-recorded online course. Access anywhere, anytime and at your own pace.

Course launching very soon. Stay tuned!

P.S. Undecided on the course? Here's what past students have said:

"I learned so many tips and tricks - from modifying the settings on my phone to how to make better use of light. Gabrielle is an engaging and approachable teacher. She offers great advice - her experience in photography and editing really shows." - Chelsea R.

"I found this workshop perfect for a beginner looking to learn more about composition, lighting and photo editing. Gabrielle had lots of examples to show us as she walked us through what makes a good photo. She provided great materials (notes, instructions) and her explanations were super enlightening. I learned so much and I'm looking forward to a new outlook when I head out to shoot some more photos!" - Jenn E.
